1984 Topps Johnny Bench…that shoulda been

Card #6 in the 1984 Topps baseball card set was a “highlights” card featuring Johnny Bench, Carl Yastrzemski, and Gaylord Perry, all of whom announced their retirements at the end of 1983 and all of whom would eventually land in Cooperstown for their achievements as professional baseball players. Unfortunately, card #6 took the place of individual cards of the featured players.

Baseball Card Recollections sought to rectify one-third of that error in judgment by making a custom Gaylord Perry card a few months ago. Today, I bring you another third in the form of the greatest player to ever put on catcher’s gear…even though he wrapped up his career splitting time between 1B and 3B for the most part. He did catch in 5 games, and even played left field once. But for the most part in 1983, Johnny Bench was an infielder.

I give you the 1984 Topps Johnny Bench card that shoulda been…

Now, who is gonna make that Yaz card?

  1. In my honest opinion, Topps would not use a photo of Bench with his head touching the top border of the photo.

    Overall, your card-that-should’ve-been is OK.

This is where you talk...
