Steve Vai’s “John The Revelator” Premieres On

Virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer Steve Vai will be releasing The Story of Light on August 14th. The album, which will be released on Vai’s own Favored Nations Entertainment, contains 12 new songs, including the track “John The Revelator,” which just received a premiere on

Vai’s rendition of the gospel call-and-response standard features vocals from The Voice finalist Beverly McClellan. The version, says Vai, was inspired by the 1930 recording by Blind Willie Johnson.

“I heard Blind Willie Johnson’s version and it oozed with mojo,” Vai says. “I was overwhelmed with the compunction to add some voodoo hot sauce to it.”

The Story of Light is a sprawling and expressive 12-song set that continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc that began with the artist’s most recent studio release, 2005’s acclaimed Real Illusions: Reflections.

Although The Story of Light is largely instrumental, the album does feature guest vocalists including singer-songwriter Aimee Mann-dueting with Vai on “No More Amsterdam,” which she also co-wrote. Other highlights include the title track (which opens the album), “Gravity Storm,” “The Moon and I,” and “Velorum.”
