2011 Reds (’92 Style): Chris Valaika

Bad news for Chris Valaika: Brandon Phillips wants to be a Red the rest of his career. His exact words? “There’s no other place I’d rather be.” The team has several middle infielders in the minors besides Valaika, but could any of them unseat the Gold Glover at second base?

2010 Reds (’72 Style): Chris Valaika “chase card”

It’s so good to have young guys like Valaika on the team. He really stepped up when Phillips needed a break and got it done at the plate. Not only that, he gave Matt Maloney’s wife some fantastic fashion tips last week. (No, those heels do not go with that dress!)

This is the “chase card” variation; you can see the real fake card here.

2010 Reds (’72 Style): Chris Valaika

Rookie second-sacker Chris Valaika helped the Reds out in a pinch when Brandon Phillips missed a few days with a minor injury recently. He started every game August 27-31, and the team only lost one game in that stretch. Valaika banged out eight hits–including a double and a homer–in that stretch for a .364 average.

It’s really amazing how many rookies the Reds have employed this year that have contributed to the team’s success: Valaika, Chris Heisey, Mike Leake, Travis Wood, and of course, Aroldis Chapman.
