Happy Reds birthday, Roberto Petagine!

June 7, 1971

Roberto Petagine was an absolute beast…in Japan. I suppose the beastness started in the States, when he hit 31 homers and drove in 100 runs while batting .317 in 1997…for the Mets’ AAA affiliate Norfolk. The Reds picked him up for the 1998 season, and he continued to tear it up in the minors, hitting 24 homers and driving in 109, hitting .331 for Indianapolis. Cincinnati called him up in August, and in 34 games, he hit 3 homers and drove in only 7 runs, hitting a paltry .258. Petagine then went overseas and treated Japanese baseball fans to 223 home runs from 1999-2004. He returned to America in 2005, again struggling at the major league level. His last hurrah was back in Japan, as he hit 10 homers in 81 games for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.
