Happy Reds birthday, Mike Kelly!

June 2, 1970

Sometimes I like to play the “what if” game. Mike Kelly was the 2nd overall pick in the 1991 draft for the Braves, just behind Brien Taylor. Instead of Kelly, the Braves could have drafted Manny Ramirez (69.2 ill-gotten WAR), Shawn Green (34.5—I can’t remember, was he a ‘roider?), Cliff Floyd (25.9), or Aaron Sele (20.6). Kelly ended his six-year career with just 0.4 WAR, but during his two years in Atlanta, he was actually -0.4. His only positive, greater than zero WAR came with the Reds in 1997, and that was in only 73 games.
