Happy Reds birthday, Clay Carroll!

May 2, 1941

Clay Carroll was an important but often overlooked contributor to the Big Red Machine of the early 1970s. He was twice named to the All-Star team, and in 1972 Carroll led the National League in saves, finishing fifth in Cy Young voting and 13th in MVP voting. Following the 1975 season, however, the Reds dealt Carroll to the White Sox for Rich Hinton and minor leaguer Jeff Sovern.
