Happy Reds birthday, Red Lucas!
April 28, 1902
Red Lucas had a stellar reputation during his career as one of the pinch hitters in the league. From 1923-1938, Lucas collected 114 pinch-hits, the major league record for nearly a quarter of a century. He led the National League in most pinch-hits in a season four times. Here’s the kicker, though: Red Lucas was a pitcher. Back in the day, pitchers were expected to know how to produce from the plate, much like Madison Bumgarner (get well soon) does today. Lucas collected 404 hits and batted .281 to go along with his 157-135 record and 3.72 ERA. He received MVP consideration four times, finishing sixth in the race in 1929. Lucas was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 1965.
