Happy Reds birthday, Hector Cruz!

April 2, 1953

Hector Cruz played two years in Cincinnati, batting .233 in 126 games for the Reds in 1979 and 1980. He started his career in St. Louis in 1973, the same team his brothers Jose Cruz and Tommy Cruz played for. Hector only got into the action 11 times in ’73, while Tommy only played 3 games for the Cards that year. Manager Red Schoendienst never put the three brothers in the outfield in the same game; as his team was never far from the top of the division, he couldn’t be bothered with such novelties. Hector and Tommy returned to the minors in 1974, and by the time Hector returned to the big club in 1975, Jose was roaming the outfield of the Astrodome.
