Happy Reds birthday, Benito Santiago!

March 9, 1965

I will forever remember Benito Santiago’s 1987 rookie season, and the excitement surrounding his 34-game hitting streak at the end of the year, and the controversy of whether the streak would officially be allowed to continue in 1988. It was a moot point, as he failed to get a hit in three at-bats in the second-to-last game of the year, but if I recall correctly, the commissioner had ruled that the streak would not carry over from one season to the next. Santiago was the 1987 NL Rookie of the Year, and was one of a slew of former major award winners to play for the Reds in the 1990s, along with Kevin Mitchell, Vince Coleman, Terry Pendleton, Jerome Walton, and Frank Viola.
