Happy Reds birthday, Jeffrey Hammonds!

Hammonds

March 5, 1971

This is where WAR gets me. Compare Jeffrey Hammonds’ stats with the Reds in 1999 to his stats with the Rockies in 2000. With the Reds, he hit 17 home runs, drove in 41 runs, and slashed .279/.347/.523. With the Rockies in 2000, he hit 20 home runs, drove in 106 runs, and slashed .335/.395/.529. Obviously he was better in 2000, right? Not according to WAR, which shows him at 2.2 both years. I love WAR in theory, but I have to scratch my head when a 41-RBI season is the same as a 106-RBI season.
