Happy Reds birthday, Chick Hafey!
February 12, 1903
Chick Hafey is a Hall of Famer, but is often seen as one of the poorer selections for enshrinement. He had the benefit of playing with Frankie Frisch on the Gashouse Gang Cardinals in the 1920s, and Frisch had the ability to schmooze Veterans Committee members into including Hafey among their selections in 1971. He had a short peak, hitting more than 25 home runs and driving in more than 100 runs three straight years, and leading the league in batting average in 1931. But even with those numbers, he never had an MVP-level season in WAR. During his five years in Cincinnati, Hafey batted .301 with 37 homers and 215 RBI.
