Happy Reds birthday, Sammy Ellis!

February 11, 1941

Sammy Ellis was one of several Reds prospects featured on 1963 Topps “Rookie Stars” cards, along with Jesse Gonder, Tommy Harper, and some guy named Pete Rose. The Ellis/Gonder card (which also featured Ray Culp and John Boozer) was one of a couple of such cards that was mislabeled “1962 Rookie Stars,” then corrected to “1963 Rookie Stars.” One can only imagine what an error/correction variation of the Rose rookie would cost today.
