Happy Reds birthday, Ruben Mateo!


February 10, 1978

Ruben Mateo was a highly-touted rookie for the Texas Rangers, owning minor league pitching at the end of the 20th century. He hit .314 with 12 homers and 67 RBI for Port Charlotte (A+) in 1997, .309 with 18 homers and 75 RBI for Tulsa (AA) in 1998, and .336 with 18 homers and 62 RBI for Oklahoma (AAA) in 1999. Before the 2000 season, he was rated the #6 prospect by Baseball America, but never played more than 74 games in any season in the majors. In six years for the Rangers, Red, Pirates, and Royals, Mateo walloped 21 dingers with 89 RBI while hitting .250.
