Happy Reds birthday, Tony Mullane!

January 30, 1859

Tony Mullane was so popular with women, it is said that teams hosted “Ladies Day” when he was scheduled to pitch. “The Apollo of the Box” collected 284 victories in his 13-year career with the Wolverines, Eclipse, Browns, Blue Stockings, Red Stockings, Orioles, and Spiders; he may have reached the former “magic number” 300 had he not been suspended for the entire 1885 season. He is the all-time leader in wild pitches with 343, and his career 60.3 WAR makes him a borderline Hall of Fame candidate. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2010.
