2015 Reds, 1990 Score style: Kevin Gregg
The change.org petition to send relief pitcher Kevin Gregg back to AAA—started only three days ago—reached 3277 supporters before it was closed. Gregg is having a rough time for the Reds, sporting a 10.13 ERA in 11 relief appearances. His career started in 2003 with the Anaheim Angels, and has also pitched for the Marlins, Cubs, Blue Jays, Orioles, Cubs again, and Marlins again. Five times in his career, his season ERA was below 4.00; last year for the Marlins, he finished with a 10.00 after 12 games (only 9 innings).
Do the Reds have a solution in Louisville? Sam LeCure, who has not had an ERA over 4.00 since his 2010 rookie season, is the most obvious name that comes to mind. So far this year, his AAA ERA is 5.40 in ten games. That’s not spectacular, but it’s better than Gregg, and LeCure has a better track record. I can’t imagine the Gregg experiment will last much longer, but if LeCure doesn’t get a call soon, I have to wonder if he has an enemy in the front office for the Reds? Did he say something to upset Walt Jocketty or Bryan Price? Is he being punished?
