I skipped over the Howsam card a few days ago because I thought it would be a boring entry, but today I decided to go ahead and get it over with. Howsam was the man behind the Big Red Machine in the 1970s, hiring Sparky Anderson as the manager and bringing Morgan, Geronimo, and Foster to the team. Yes, he was a major part of the Reds’ success in the 70s, but he was also the man who began dismantling the machine by trading Perez to the Expos in 1977. Howsam stepped down as general manager and president of the team shortly thereafter, and the Machine fell apart by losing players to free agency.
But when I went to Howsam’s Wikipedia page, I learned about his involvement in the American Football League, co-founding the Denver Broncos in 1959, and baseball’s expansion in the early 1990s, serving on the Colorado Baseball Commission which brought the Rockies to baseball. Howsam died in 2008 from a heart ailment.
