2009 Topps Ken Griffey

Ken Griffey, Jr. was a pretty big deal twenty years ago. His dad wasn’t as big a deal 36 years ago, but he was a solid outfielder that played on some outstanding Cincinnati Reds teams. He was born in the same city as Hall of Famer Stan “The Man” Musial (Donora, PA), and there may be something in the water there because Griffey had some spectacular seasons at the plate in the mid-70s. In 1975, he batted .305, while in 1976, he lost the batting title to Bill Madlock on the last day of the season (.339-.336). He finished 8th in MVP voting that year and made his first of three All-Star appearances.

Of course, Griffey is most famous for playing major league baseball with his son…on the same team (the Seattle Mariners)…and hitting back-to-back home runs with Junior. That is a feat that may never be duplicated.
