Morgan is one of four Hall of Famers from the Big Red Machine of the 1970s (Tony Perez–who is behind Morgan in that photo–Johnny Bench, and Sparky Anderson are the others). However, there should be six. The entire Reds infield of the 1970s should be in Cooperstown…Rose and Concepcion have been shut out long enough. The rumor mill started up again a couple of months ago that Selig was considering reinstatement for Rose, who would then have to be inducted by the Veterans Committee. It would be nice to see Concepcion get the nod from the VC as well.
This post is supposed to be about Morgan. That is his photo on that card up there. But you know what? I don’t really like him. He was a spectacular second baseman (10-time All Star, back-to-back MVP awards in ‘75-‘76, 5 consecutive Gold Gloves), but he is a terrible broadcaster. And in this world of “what have you done for me lately?” all I can think about is how annoying he is behind a microphone.
Congrats on a great playing career, though.
