Foster was a monster in 1977, banging 52 home runs and driving 149 home en route to an easy MVP award. He hit forty in 1978, but never went beyond thirty after that (and had never had more than thirty before ‘77). He was an All-Star five times, and finished high in MVP voting four times other than his winning year (2nd in ‘76, 6th in ‘78, 12th in ‘79, and 3rd in ‘81).
Foster came to the Reds in 1971 from the Giants in exchange for Frank Duffy and Vern Geishert. After dismantling most of the rest of the Big Red Machine, Foster was unceremoniously sent to the Mets for Greg Harris, Jim Kern and Alex Trevino. He finished his career in 1986 playing 15 games for the White Sox.
Foster makes frequent appearances at the Reds Hall of Fame, signing free autographs for fans. My son and I have had the privilege of meeting him twice.
