Yeah, I know. I have no life. But I love my non-life. And my passion for baseball cards has never been so high as it is now. I went to the card shop tonight, thinking about picking up a box of something but wasn’t sure what. I like the cards with older players, but I have so many commons from the 1980s that I wasn’t really interested in the $5 boxes of 1988 Donruss. I started out in the Reds card section, where I picked out a few for $1 each: 1979 Griffey Sr., 1974 Concepcion, 1974 Geronimo, and 1982 Topps Coke Mario Soto.
I also wanted to see what kind of game-used cards they had. Most of them were priced at $10+, which is a little more than I’m willing to spend right now, but I did spy a George Foster bat card for $5, and I had to have it.

I asked if they had any packs featuring older players, like 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game. They didn’t have those, but did have several packs of 2005 Upper Deck Past Time Pennants that they have had trouble selling. I was going to pick up a couple of packs, even though it was a little pricey in my opinion ($2.99 per pack, 5 cards in each). The lady told me I could have the whole box for $40. 27 packs in the box. That’s about $1.50 per pack, half the original price. I wasn’t going to turn it down. I’m a sucker for the 1970s and 1980s players.
I didn’t figure I would get any autographs in the box, since it was opened and I assumed it had been searched. But I was wrong. I got one of the coolest autographs I could have gotten…

I love the Big Red Machine, and I’ve always been a fan of Griffey, even before Junior came along and took the baseball world by storm. So pulling a Senior autograph was very cool in my book. My luck didn’t stop there, though, as I also pulled a Willie Horton sig…

I’m not a big Tigers fan, and am fairly unfamiliar with Horton, so this card is available for trade if anyone has something cool to trade for it. (Note: “cool” does not necessarily mean super-valuable in my vocabulary).
I’m 20 cards short of the base set (I’ll be posting the list of needs and doubles on my Sets In Progress page shortly). It’s only a 90-card set, but it looks really nice in the binder (and according to Beckett, the cards are worth $93 individually). Not a bad purchase for $40, huh?

That top card is sweet!
Lucky you, I have no card shops left near me.
I was pretty stoked to see a $5 price on it, instead of the $10 they were asking for most of the other cards.
