Quiet Riot’s Kevin Dubrow (10/29/55-11/19/07)

One of the celebrity deaths that affected me most in 2007 was the passing of Kevin Dubrow, lead singer for Quiet Riot. The band is known best for their 1983 hit, a cover of Slade’s “Cum On Feel The Noize.” Guitar legend Randy Rhoads was also with the band before they made it big in [...]

Are Canadian writers really that bad?

I got to thinking about the television writer’s strike today, and wonder why the networks don’t seek some foreign help? Get some Brits or Canadians to write a few episodes, or hire some scrubs not in the union. They have to be better than the reality programming on tap.

I am a mediocre wordsmith

I’m not crazy about the word mediocre, but at least it is better than awful. I scored 9 out of 15 on MSN’s vocabulary quiz. Take the quiz and see if you fare better. But no cheating!
Are you a vocabulary champion?

Do you hate puppies and children?

I really am looking forward to the end of the primary season, so we know who the national candidates will be and we can make informed decisions about the 2008 election. Right now, no one knows for sure who will be the front-runners when all the dust settles. I have my hopes up for a [...]

Top Ten of 2007

“Hair metal” is my favorite musical genre. But it is not the only kind of music I listen to. I enjoy some classic country (Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard), 80s pop (Young MC, Tone Loc), and several other types of music (Buckcherry, Fergie, Violent Femmes). Each has its own qualities and I have to be in [...]

Allowing Ron Paul to explain himself

On the Glenn Beck television program on Headline News, Ron Paul was given the full hour (minus commercials, of course) to explain his positions a little more clearly. Personally, I like Glenn Beck a lot. And, from what I have heard, I like Dr. Paul. While he has no shot of winning the Republican nomination [...]

Flesh of my flesh

When I first told my family about my career as a serial killer, they didn’t believe me. “You have such an active imagination,” they said. “The details are so vivid. If I didn’t know you, I would almost believe you!”
My first killing was in the summer of 1998. Baseball was the big thing with two [...]

America’s pastime

The American Heritage Dictionary says a pastime is “an activity that occupies one’s spare time pleasantly.” Baseball has long been known as “America’s pastime,” a game played by kids in the backyard with wiffle balls, or in an organized league with the city or the school. It was fun to root for the hapless Cubs, the perennial underdogs [...]

Take me out to the ballgame…

The Mitchell Report came out yesterday, accusing several current and former major leaguers of steroid use. I’m still digesting what I’ve read (not the whole thing…I’m not that bored), and I will share my thoughts on it at some point (maybe tonight, maybe next week). But one thing that really bugs me is the media’s [...]

Awake at 8 a.m.

I work the night shift, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Usually I stay on the same schedule even on days off, but I have vacation this week so I decided to go back to a day schedule for the week. It’s rare for me to be awake at this hour. I’m sure my television options [...]

A Christmas quickie…

I’m not feeling the best tonight, and will probably hit the sack in a few minutes. But I did want to share with you a nice little Christmas mash-up I found recently, full of Zeppelin hooks. Right-click and select “Save As” to download this ditty…
Yuletide Zeppelin
Zeppelin played their reunion show (hopefully the first of many) [...]
